Barcelona star Ramin Yamal is having a tough game for Spain after Spanish fans repeatedly chanted anti-Muslim slogans during Barcelona’s friendly against Egypt on Tuesday.
Yamal, who is Muslim, issued a statement on Wednesday saying the fan chants at the RCDE Stadium were disrespectful and intolerable. He said the slogans were not directed at him personally and that it didn’t matter.
“I know not all fans are like this, but to those who chant these words: using religion to taunt you on the pitch makes you look ignorant and racist,” he wrote on Instagram. “Football is for enjoying and cheering, not disrespecting people’s identities or beliefs.”
