Ball and Karaban lead No. 6 UConn to a 79-75 win over Georgetown

STOWERS, Conn. (AP) — Solo Ball scored 20 points and Alex Karaban scored 13 of his 18 points in the second half to help No. 6 UConn withstand a second-half rally and beat Georgetown 79-75 on Saturday night.

Silas Demary Jr. had 15 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists, and freshmen Braylon Mullins and Eric Reibe had 10 points each for UConn (24-2, 14-1 Big East).

Calaban made his 136th career start, a program record. He also became the winningest player in UConn men’s history, as the Huskies improved their record to 116-24 while he was in uniform. He hit two free throws with 10 seconds left to seal the victory, and Georgetown fought back from a 14-point deficit and cut the deficit to two with 11 seconds left.

KJ Lewis finished with 24 points, nine rebounds and four steals, Vincent Iwuchukwu added 16 points and Kevan Malready scored all 15 points in the second half for Georgetown (13-11, 5-9).

Georgetown tied the game with seven points to tie the game at 25. Ball went on a 12-3 run and scored 10 points in a row to give the Huskies a 41-33 lead at halftime.

With 15 minutes and 20 seconds left in the second half, Rebbe scored consecutively and the Huskies led 49-35. UConn missed its next four shots, and the Hoyas pulled within seven on Malready’s 3-pointer. Georgetown cut the deficit to six before Karaban and Ball hit 3-pointers.

With his fifth three-pointer of the game, Ball surpassed 1,000 points in his career.

Lewis, who did not score in the first 11 minutes and 35 seconds of the second half, scored 11 points in the second half and exceeded 1,000 points in his career.

Former UConn center Hasheem Thabeet was named to the Huskies Honor Team at halftime. He started 99 of 100 games for the Huskies from 2006-09. He has 1,028 career points, 847 rebounds and 417 blocks. At UConn, only Emeka Okafor has more blocks in a season and career.
