Atletico are progressing well under Diego Simeone, who oversaw a massive squad overhaul in the summer. They finished third in La Liga as usual and beat Club Brugge in the play-offs to reach the last 16. They also recently defeated Barcelona to reach the Spanish Cup final, where they are favourites. But Atletico have been somewhat inconsistent this season, with some brilliant wins against the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid but also some very poor defeats.

Atletico Madrid team news, highlights

Julian Alvarez remains the main threat in Atletico’s attack, while Antoine Griezmann is still doing his thing despite a move to MLS side Orlando City looming closer. New signing Ademola Lookman has been in fine form since joining, while Alexander Soloth has also contributed a number of big goals. Elsewhere, USMNT midfielder Johnny Cardoso has been very useful off the bench, while Jan Oblak remains an important addition in goal. Atletico’s style of play hasn’t changed much, but when they’re at full strength, they do look more dangerous and can score a lot of goals. This is the biggest difference for Atletico Madrid this season.

Tottenham Hotspur News, Focus

Injuries have hit Spurs hard all season, but they at least have their first-choice centre-back partnership for this game. Cristian Romero has just returned from a domestic suspension and Mickey van de Veen is about to serve a domestic ban, and they can finally reunite at centre-back in Europe’s biggest competition. Dominic Solanke should lead the way, with Xavi Simons likely to be tasked with creating chances behind him. Connor Gallagher joined Tottenham from Atletico Madrid in the winter transfer window and could be a key figure in the midfield for this game as his knowledge of how Atletico operate will be invaluable.

Atletico Madrid vs Tottenham Hotspur Prediction

Anything short of a heavy defeat would be a huge win for Spurs as they look to have more players back from injury for the second leg. Atletico Madrid 3-1 Tottenham Hotspur.
