Murphy spent 18 years in Major League Baseball, most of that time in a Braves uniform. Murphy won the National League Most Valuable Player Award twice, in 1982 and 1983, making him one of only 16 players to win the award consecutively.

He also won five Gold Glove Awards, four Silver Slugger Awards, and was selected to the MLB All-Star Game seven times. Murphy finished his career with a .265 batting average, 398 home runs and 1,266 RBIs.

The Baseball Writers Association of America allows a player to be placed on the HOF ballot for 15 years. In 2013, Murphy’s final year on the campaign trail, he completed 75 percent of the vote needed to enter the hall with 18.9 percent of the vote. He has participated in Eras Player Council votes in 2018, 2020 and 2022.
