With Mike Maignan’s contract set to expire in June 2026, La Gazzetta dello Sport warns Milan could end up losing the Frenchman on a free transfer, much like Gigio Donnarumma did in 2021, but the Rossoneri remain hopeful that the story will end differently this time.
Milan will continue talks over Maignan’s contract extension in the coming days, but January is quickly approaching, meaning the French goalkeeper could start talks with any other club in just a few days and complete a free transfer at the end of the season.

Milan faced the same situation a few years ago when lengthy negotiations with Donnarumma went nowhere and the Rossoneri signed Maignan from Lille ahead of Gigio’s free transfer to PSG.

Milan know that every suitor for Maignan, especially those from England, will outbid them in contract negotiations for the 30-year-old, but the Serie A giants still hope to seal a deal in the coming weeks.
Football Italia understands that Maignan’s contract extension is Milan’s top priority, with even head coach Massimiliano Allegri trying to convince the Frenchman to sign a new deal.

Igli Tare said on Sunday the club would soon resume talks with the Frenchman, who is “happy” to stay at the San Siro. However, Tare denied that Maignan was demanding a new contract worth €8 million per year.
“We have never discussed these numbers, I have never heard these numbers, but it is easy to talk about Mike because he is an outstanding lad, he is a leader and a player of the team,” Milan sporting director said.
“We are very happy with him, he likes to stay at Milan and Milan want to renew his contract. Today we have a game that we want to win and then we will have time to discuss it.”
