quick summary

Apple and Google issued a joint statement confirming that Gemini and Google’s cloud technology will be used to improve Apple’s own artificial intelligence models.

This will allow the long-awaited artificial intelligence Siri to finally appear on devices later this year.

After several years of trying to go it alone (or at least with the help of OpenAI and ChatGPT), Apple has confirmed an artificial intelligence partnership with Google.

This will allow the company to use the Gemini model and Google’s cloud technology to help develop its own Apple-based model. This, in turn, can significantly improve the features and functionality of Apple Intelligence.

Siri may be one of the most improved systems in a short period of time. The artificial intelligence version of Apple Assistant has been delayed multiple times since its initial release in 2024.

It failed to launch with Apple Intelligence later that year, and is also absent in 2025.

Now, with support from Gemini, the enhanced voice assistant should have the technology behind it to become a truly useful tool.

Google and Apple said in a joint statement: “After careful evaluation, Apple has determined that Google’s AI technology provides the strongest foundation for Apple’s foundational model and is excited about the innovative experiences it will bring to Apple users.”

“Apple Intelligence will continue to run on Apple devices and private cloud computing, while maintaining Apple’s industry-leading privacy standards.”

Apple also confirmed that a new “more personalized Siri” powered by Gemini will launch “later this year.”

Why did Apple turn to Google and Gemini?

A deal between Google and Apple has been rumored for months, with the iPhone maker expected to look to incorporate Gemini-style technology into its own devices.

After all, Samsung was the first phone manufacturer to launch Gemini support on the Galaxy S24 to support its own Galaxy AI system. It was considered leading at the time. Apple Intelligence has never been able to compete with the number of tools and features available to Samsung phone owners.

Gemini then started showing up on Android phones from multiple manufacturers, and even cheaper mid-range devices seemed to do more with AI than the iPhone.

Therefore, this deal makes sense, allowing Apple to at least be on par with its competitors in terms of device options. It will also help it expand AI capabilities on Macs, iPads, Apple TV, and many other devices.

While the deal has just been officially announced, it’s a safe bet that the two companies have been working together behind the scenes for some time – so we should see the fruits of their labor in the coming months.

This year’s WWDC is sure to be interesting.
