On December 14, Patrick Mahomes suffered a torn ACL in the Chiefs’ loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. The injury ended his season and left Kansas City facing a lengthy recovery time. The club has yet to give an exact return date. The focus now is on getting ready for next season.
Kansas City plans to put Mahomes at the center of its future. For now, the team must find a quarterback who can run the offense while Mahomes recovers. Names have surfaced. One option is Russell Wilson. Fox Sports’ Gregg Allman suggested Wilson as a stopgap measure. Allman wrote that Wilson’s 2024 numbers with the Pittsburgh Steelers include “16 touchdowns, five interceptions, and a 6-5 record,” giving him a chance to step into a walk-on role.

During that conversation, former receiver and analyst Harry Douglas offered pointed advice. He said the Chiefs must prioritize protecting Mahomes. “Protecting Patrick Mahomes … is the most important thing,” Douglas said. He warned against trading big assets for a running back like Jeremiah Love or making moves that jeopardize the team’s future.
“No, you can’t sell the farm and buy a player at the running back position when your quarterback has an ACL injury and needs protection. That to me is the most important thing in the whole equation,” Douglas added.
The message is clear. Keep Patrick Mahomes healthy and limit dangerous and costly moves. The Chiefs are 6-11 in 2025 and must rebuild their offensive confidence. Short-term signings or veteran stopgaps could help. But the priority remains Mahomes’ recovery and protecting the team’s core players.
