Analysis: Fortress breached as boos ring out

The boos at halftime and full court told their own story. It was a devastating defeat for Newcastle and manager Eddie Howe.

After back-to-back away games against Carabao Cup finalists Manchester City, Premier League champions Liverpool and defending Champions League champions Paris Saint-Germain, the exhausted team desperately needed comfort at home.

But after suffering three defeats at home in four games at St James’ Park, the former fortress is now starting to show some familiar holes on the road.

On this night, Newcastle struggled at both ends of the pitch.

Experienced full-back Kieran Trippier endured a difficult night against Dango Ouattara and struggled in the build-up to all three goals.

At the other end, forward Yoane Wissa faced Brentford for the first time since pushing to leave his former club for Newcastle last summer amid heated circumstances, but failed to impress.

Visa did have a shot in the first half that was cleared by Vitali Janette, but on this night he endured the humiliation of the visiting team, chanting “What a waste of money” and asking him “What’s the score?”

However, Newcastle United did not deserve to lose the game as they found a way to equalize through the return of Bruno Guimarães.

But they somehow found a way to do it and are in 12th place for a reason.

Newcastle United are favorites to reach the last 16 of the Champions League via the play-offs and can still reach Wembley again via the FA Cup, although they face a fourth-round test against Aston Villa next week.

But this season things started to go wrong.
