Glenn’s routine, set to Madonna’s “Like a Prayer,” started out well, doing three and a half weeks, but she attempted a triple toe loop after three moves and failed, invalidating the move and losing possible points.

The first-time Olympian completed the rest of the program but immediately showed disappointment before sliding into his coach’s arms and bursting into tears. She scored 67.39 and finished in 13th place.

Alysa Liu earned the night’s highest score among American skaters with 76.59 points, finishing third in Thursday’s free skate. The third American on the team, Isabeau Levito, skated to 70.84 points and finished eighth. All three women qualified for the free skate event, after which medals will be awarded.

After the show, Liu, who was only 20 years old, was interviewed by reporters, and Glenn skated in the mixed zone. She gasped when Glenn missed her three-toe ring.

“She has been through so much and worked very hard, really, she is a very hard-working person and she has overcome a lot of difficulties,” Liu told reporters including People. “I just want her to be happy. That’s all I really want. So I’ll see her later, don’t worry, guys. We’ll be together.”

Asked if the emotion Glenn displayed tonight was difficult to watch, Liu said yes, but that her teammates’ reaction was “understandable.”

“She’s very strong, so she can handle it,” the athlete said.
