Alabama’s AHSAA splits public/private football teams into separate classifications

The Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) voted 13-2 on Friday to separate private and public schools for the first time in its 104 years of existence when it comes to athletic championships.

In a historic turn of events, only two board members voted against changing the previous system. Beginning with the 2026-27 season, public and private schools will host separate state championship series.

The AHSAA merged Class 7A, which will now be Classes 6A through 1A, and then the private classifications will be 2A and 1A. For the first time since 1922 Warren G. Harding (29th President of the United States) During his tenure as President of the United States, changes occurred between the state’s public and private schools, although they could still compete against each other during the regular season.

We collected information on each school’s participating Alabama high school football AHSAA classes for the 2026-27 and 2027-28 school years.
