In the Battle of the Bulldogs, Brantley defeated Wardley 62-47 to earn a berth in the state championship game for the second consecutive year. They will take on the Hubbardville Lions, who lost to the Hutch Bobcats 71-60, to secure their spot in the championship game.
Regardless, Brantley will certainly be in for a rematch, as they faced the Hutch in last year’s final, losing heartbreakingly 69-67 to fall just one game and one basket away from the title. They defeated Harbertville 78-67 to advance to the title game, so both finalists will be looking for redemption when they meet Thursday night at BJCC Legacy Arena in Birmingham.
Class 1A team hopes to end long title drought that spans decades
Brantley hasn’t won a state title since its more than 30-year streak from 1993-95, but led by 6-foot-9 freshman center captain Devin Melton, they have to be considered the favorite. Melton had 19 points, 11 rebounds and six blocks against Wardley to help lead the team to victory and a rematch with Harbertville for its first state title since 1948.
