GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) – Officials say a busy ramp in downtown Grand Rapids will be closed for several months. semi truck collision Tuesday.
The ramp from westbound I-196 to southbound US-131 will be closed April 30 for bridge repairs, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation.
MDOT said drivers can exit I-196 westbound at Lane Avenue, go south on Lane, then east on First Street to I-196 eastbound. The ramp from eastbound I-196 to southbound US-131 remains open.
Police say semi-truck accident closes US-131 ramp ‘indefinitely’
The crash happened around 11 a.m. Tuesday at the I-196 overpass on southbound US-131. According to Michigan State Police, a semi-truck carrying approximately 140,000 pounds of pea gravel and sand was traveling southbound in the center lane of US-131 when its front end began to swerve to the left. State police said the driver tried to straighten the truck but entered the ramp from westbound I-196. The truck flipped and hit a concrete wall. It’s partially wedged underneath the ramp.
MSP said the driver was rescued about an hour later with minor injuries.
The crash temporarily closed the highway on Tuesday, snarling traffic for several hours. Firefighters also had to clean up a diesel leak, according to the city.
