AEW’s Tony Khan Explains Why He’s Turned Down Multiple Potential ROH TV Deals

Since 2023, weekly episodes of Ring of Honor have been broadcast primarily on the HonorClub streaming platform, with occasional episodes uploaded to YouTube. In contrast, ROH’s sister show All Elite Wrestling is in the midst of a multi-year media rights deal with Warner Bros. Discovery, with its weekly content airing on TNT, TBS and HBO Max. During the ROH Final Battle media call, ROH owner and AEW CEO Tony Khan talked about the possibility of moving ROH to a larger platform, specifically a television network.

According to Khan, he’s received multiple “great” offers to push ROH into television, but so far, none of them have really won him over. “I’ve had opportunities at times to move ROH to television from good media partners,” he said, “but right now, we have to look at what’s going on with AEW. AEW has a media rights deal worth a $500 million contract. Given that I have a $500 million wrestling television production contract, I really want to make sure that I get good rights fees and that the ROH situation doesn’t necessarily equal what we have with AEW. situation because it’s pretty historic for a company that’s historic with the Challenger Wrestling brand with the media rights that we have and the following that AEW has.

“ROH, I’m very interested in doing ROH TV shows. I don’t think the media rights have to be equal or definitely no greater, but I do think I’d like to get a reasonable royalty and a perfect situation with a media partner.”

As it stands, Khan confirmed that ROH’s pay-per-view shows and weekly “ROH on HonorClub” shows are bringing in “very good” revenue, despite being behind HonorClub’s paywall. Even the occasional show on YouTube is said to have received a positive response.

When asked to further elaborate on the criteria for Ring of Honor to potentially hit the bigger stage, Khan noted that he was considering combining multiple components.

“It’s not any one factor,” he said. “It has to be the right fit. For me, it has to be the right media partner, but the funding has to be right as well. And it has to be a combination of those two things. Sometimes we have great media offers and sometimes we have funding offers. When they work with the right media partners and the right funding [I’d make the deal]. Of course, when you have a deal like the one we have with TBS, TNT and HBO Max, it’s one of those great situations where the combination is perfect. “

Under the current $555 million deal between AEW and Warner Bros. Discovery Channel, “AEW Dynamite” and “AEW Collision” will continue to air on TBS and TNT, respectively, and will also be available for simultaneous streaming on HBO Max. HBO Max has since been designated as AEW’s primary pay-per-view partner, and it also allows subscribers to purchase and stream AEW PPVs at a discount.

ROH’s next pay-per-view event, Final Battle, will take place later tonight in Columbus, Ohio. Matches included the ROH Women’s Pure Championship finals between Deonna Purrazzo and Billie Starkz, ROH Women’s Television Champion Mercedes Mone vs. Red Velvet, and ROH World Champion Bandido defending her title in a Survival of the Fittest match. On the latest episode of “ROH on HonorClub,” which aired Thursday night, it was notable that Queen Aminata lost her spot in the semifinals of the Women’s Pure Championship Tournament.
