what people are saying

While some commenters were amused by the suggestion, joking and sharing memes, others supported the proposed alliance: “This is how we in Austria resolved conflicts in the good old days of the Habsburg Empire,” said one user.

“This is actually a pretty smart deal,” one user wrote. Another user said: “It would be okay if life were as simple as Bridgerton.”

Others are alarmed by the possible impact.

“This isn’t geopolitics, it’s medieval fan fiction,” another user wrote. “Greenland is not a bargaining chip, Princess Isabella of Denmark is not a pawn, and Barron Trump is not a diplomatic tool. Nations are not exchanged through marriage, this is not the 1400s.”

While others are still guessing whether they’re a good match.

How does Greenland fit into all this?

Greenland is the world’s largest island and has been part of NATO ally Denmark since the 18th century.

In recent months, the leaders of Denmark and Greenland have emphasized to the American public and Trump that Greenland is not for sale.

While Greenland has its own local government (including a parliament that oversees some domestic and civil affairs), laws related to defence, national security and the economy are controlled by policymakers in Copenhagen.

Trump first expressed interest in buying Greenland in 2019 during his first term as president. In a joint address to Congress on March 4, 2025, the president stated that he planned to acquire Greenland “somehow.”

The White House said he was discussing his options, including the possible use of U.S. troops, a move that would shock the NATO alliance and deepen divisions between Trump and European leaders.

Who is Princess Isabella?

Princess Isabella of Denmark arrives at the Royal Theater Old Stage in Copenhagen for a performance celebrating her 18th birthday on April 15, 2025.

Isabella is second in line to the throne and the eldest daughter of King Frederick X of Denmark and Queen Mary.

Isabella, the middle child, is the younger sister of Crown Prince Christian and the older sister of 15-year-old twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine. Isabella is one year younger than Barron and will turn 18 on April 21st.

According to Harper’s Bazaar, the royal family mainly resides at Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen and the Chancellery at Fredensborg Palace in Zealand, Denmark.
