A Look at Coos County

The Oregon Department of Education (ODE) recently launched an online portal that provides easy access to statistics for any school district. Now, anyone can log in to view in-depth metrics to see how their community is performing relative to state averages. Obtaining these numbers will be useful to policymakers and community members concerned about local education. General statistics such as graduation rates and regular attendance can be provided, as well as details such as demographic data and subject-specific proficiency.

“These profiles are an important tool to help us understand how our students and schools are performing; where we are making progress, where we can do better, and how we can continue to improve how we serve communities across the state,” said ODE Director Dr. Charlene Williams. “Ultimately, this data is more than just what is reported, it is an opportunity to respond. It is an opportunity to continue to implement the strategies we know work and make adjustments as needed so that every Oregon student can thrive. ODE will continue to focus on supporting programs that make a difference.

Overall, Coos County districts tend to fare worse than the state average. Let’s focus on some statistics for Coos County and how they compare in terms of regular attendance, ninth graders nearing completion, and actual graduation rates.

On-track attendance is the percentage of students who attend more than 90% of their registered class hours, 9th grade on-track is the percentage of high school freshmen who have the appropriate support to graduate on time, and the four-year graduation rate is calculated on an annual basis (this would be the students who started on 20/21 and earned their diploma on 23/24).

Interpreting the statistics can be a tricky task given the small sample size, but it is interesting to understand how factors such as poverty and support staff to pupil ratios affect educational outcomes. To drill down into the statistics or see specific numbers for your school, you can visit:
