DENVER (KDVR) — The Lakewood Police Department said Saturday that its agents responded to a report of a hit-and-run involving a suspect and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents out of concerns for community safety and possible violations of local laws.
An LPD spokesperson said just before 10 a.m., police agents were called to the 200 block of South Ingalls Street on a report that a suspect attempted to “ram” two ICE vehicles with his car, injuring at least one ICE agent.
The suspect reportedly got out of the car and is believed to be in an apartment on the block, police said.

The police department said its agents set up a perimeter but had no contact with the suspect or the ICE operation. The department said it responded out of “concerns for community safety and possible violations of local laws.” Police did not specify which law may have been violated.
“Lakewood police have never had contact with federal suspects. We are only on scene for community safety,” the police department said in a statement.
During the incident, some community members asked for help escorting their families out of the apartment building, police said.
“Our agents are happy to assist and help ensure their safety,” LPD said.
Police said federal agents had obtained an arrest warrant and more federal agents were on scene. The department said they left the scene once it was clear the police presence was no longer needed.
SkyFOX flew over the scene and saw a crowd gathering outside the apartment and on the street. Federal agents later appeared to carry a handcuffed man into a vehicle and leave the scene.
