The next-generation Xbox is believed to be targeting a 2027 release, with AMD CEO Lisa Su recently hinting that the console could be released next year. However, according to a new report, Microsoft has yet to “fully commit internally” to that release window. The parent company of Xbox is reportedly considering 2027 as the “best-case scenario” for launching its next-generation console. Additionally, the company is said to be working with other OEMs to bring more Xbox hardware options to consumers.

A report from Windows Central reveals Microsoft’s plans for the next generation of home consoles, including potential third-party options from OEMs such as Asus’ ROG Xbox Ally handheld device. According to reports, the company has not yet locked in a 2027 release window for the next-generation Xbox. Instead, Microsoft is said to be prioritizing delivering a polished Windows experience on the console.

This doesn’t mean that the next-generation Xbox home console won’t launch in 2027 under any circumstances. Microsoft reportedly sees a launch next year as a “best-case scenario.” But the point is to make the overhauled Xbox experience smoother.

Xbox Hardware Options from Other OEMs

The report also claims that Microsoft is working with OEMs such as Asus to create multiple options for the next-generation Xbox at different price points. As with the two ROG Xbox Ally models, we could see Xbox-branded hardware from other companies. These could include higher-end models priced higher than Microsoft’s standard Xbox and more affordable lower-spec models.

Microsoft has reportedly yet to finalize the price point for the next Xbox, but has confirmed that its next-gen console will offer a “very premium, very high-end curated experience.”

Although other OEMs also plan to offer Xbox hardware options, Microsoft has not given up on its own hardware plans. In addition to the next-gen Xbox, the company is reportedly looking to make a first-party Xbox handheld at some point.

Next-gen Xbox

The next generation Xbox is widely believed to be a PC/console hybrid running Windows with a console-like interface on top. Microsoft said the next-generation Xbox experience will not be “locked to a single store or tied to a device” and may support third-party digital storefronts such as Steam and the Epic Games Store.

Last week, Epic Games said it planned to make the Epic Games Store available on the next-generation Xbox home console “day one.”

The PS6 and next-gen Xbox are rumored to launch in 2027, but recent reports suggest that the 10th-generation consoles may be delayed due to rising memory and storage prices due to artificial intelligence requirements. Last month, an industry analyst claimed that Sony planned to extend the PS5’s life cycle, which could delay the PS6 beyond 2028.

Chipmaker AMD, which is developing custom SoCs for the PS6 and next-generation Xbox, said on its latest earnings call that Microsoft’s 10th-generation home console is expected to be released in 2027.
