Victor Wembanyama had been pushing to come back sooner than the team preferred

Johnson admitted that Wembanyama tried several times to convince staff to bring him back. Wembunyama leads the Spurs in points (24.0), rebounds (11.6) and blocks (3.0). “One thing that’s been very consistent is he’s very direct and direct,” Johnson said. “So, his line was always, ‘I’m available. I’m ready to go. I’m excited to go.’ So, you respect that and you love that mentality and that competitiveness. It also continues to remind us as an organization and the few people who are having these conversations with him that we have a responsibility to support him in a way that’s in the best interest of him right now and long-term because he’s so important to this league. He deserves it.”
