January 5 (UPI) — Manchester United have sacked head coach Ruben Amorim, the Red Devils announced on Monday.
The Red Devils cited their sixth-placed position in the Premier League when explaining what they said was a “reluctant” decision. Darren Fletcher has been appointed as interim coach.

The Red Devils said: “The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wish him all the best for the future.”
Amorim will take over as Red Devils head coach in November 2024, replacing interim coach Ruud van Nistelrooy. Erik ten Hag will coach the Red Devils from 2022 to October 2024.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Jose Mourinho, Louis van Gaal and David Moyes are the Red Devils’ other managers since long-term manager Sir Alex Ferguson stepped down in 2013.
The Red Devils finished 15th in the Premier League with an 11-18-9 record in the 2024-25 season. They scored 42 points in that game, their lowest total since relegation in the 1973-74 season. Through the first six Premier League games of the 2025-26 season, they are just 2-3-1.

Amorim was fired less than 24 hours after speaking at a news conference about potentially ending his term.
“This situation will continue for 18 months or when the board decides to change,” Amorim told reporters. “That’s my point and I want to end with this. I’m not going to give up. I’m going to do my job until someone else comes here to replace me.”
The Red Devils (8-5-7) have won just one of their past five games, a 1-1 draw with Leeds United on Sunday in Leeds. They trail Chelsea (8-5-7) and fourth-place Liverpool (10-6-4).
Arsenal (15-2-3), Manchester City (13-4-3) and Aston Villa (13-4-3) lead the Premier League standings.
The Red Devils have another Premier League match against 19th-place Burnley (3-14-3) on Wednesday at 3:15 pm ET.
