LA MESA, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) – The San Diego Humane Society’s Humane Enforcement Division rescued 40 dogs and puppies from an apartment in La Mesa Tuesday night.
The La Mesa Police Department notified humane officers Monday night after conducting a welfare check on a tenant facing eviction, SDHS reported. According to reports, the tenant has not been seen since December 23.
When humane officers arrived at the 500-square-foot apartment, they found approximately 40 dogs and puppies living in feces and in unsanitary conditions.

After ensuring the dogs had access to food and water, humane officers and medical staff classified the puppies and transported them to the Humane Society’s San Diego campus.

Each rescued dog receives a physical exam, vaccinations, deworming and a microchip before being placed in a kennel.
The large enrollment comes at a difficult time as the Humane Society campus is already severely overcrowded. On Tuesday morning, staff at the San Diego campus counted 725 dogs in care, well above capacity.

Rescued dogs will receive a thorough medical and behavioral evaluation before being approved for adoption. The Humane Society is calling on the community to provide support.
