The male reporter’s voice was barely audible on the television microphone, but he appeared to ask Trump if he was “ready to sign the security document today.”
Trump was so infuriated by the question that he stopped mid-sentence and lashed out at the reporter.
“Well, it depends on what the security agreement says – what a stupid question. No one even knows what the security agreement will say,” Trump said. “But there will be a security deal, it will be a strong deal and European countries will be heavily involved in it. They will be involved in protection and so on.”
The president later told a female reporter that he had no deadline to end the war — he just wanted it to end as soon as possible. Trump said “nothing is more important” to him.
Ahead of Trump’s meeting with Zelensky, the Ukrainian leader this week shared his latest 20-point peace plan, which includes security guarantees and an agreement to convert the disputed territory into a demilitarized free economic zone.
“I just had a good and productive call with Russian President Vladimir Putin ahead of my meeting with Ukrainian President Zelensky today at 1:00 PM,” Trump wrote. “The meeting will be held in the main dining room of Mar-a-Lago. Media invited to attend.”
Asked about the new plan, Trump told POLITICO that the Ukrainian president “has nothing until I approve it,” adding, “So we’ll see what he has.”
Trump also spoke to Russian leader Vladimir Putin before Zelensky’s arrival on Sunday. He told reporters in front of Mar-a-Lago that he planned to call Putin after the meeting to continue negotiations that were “pretty complicated, but not that complicated.”
When Zelensky arrived, the president greeted him warmly with a handshake. The Ukrainian leader wore a black dress shirt and black coat.
Trump praised Zelensky and said his country had endured nearly four years of brutal war. He said Ukraine had made some “very strong attacks” on Russia, but he didn’t say that “negatively.”
“There were some explosions happening all over Russia, and it seemed to me, I don’t know, it wasn’t coming from the Congo,” Trump continued. “I don’t think it came from the United States. It could have come from Ukraine, but I didn’t ask that question — and maybe I wouldn’t bother asking.
