The Toronto Blue Jays are one of the teams many expect to continue spending big this winter. After investing $210 million in Dylan Cease and around $70 million in Cody Ponce and Tyler Rogers, the Blue Jays aren’t stopping.

They’ve been linked to Kyle Tucker and Bo Bichette in free agency, and while both are still options, Alex Bregman has become an option, according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal.
But what does the Blue Jays’ interest in Bregman mean for Tucker and Bichette? While the Blue Jays are spending lavishly, only one of these three teams is realistic for Toronto.

“Add the Toronto Blue Jays to the list of teams interested in free agent third baseman Alex Bregman,” Rosenthal wrote. “…Team officials have recently been in contact with Bregman’s agent, Scott Boras, according to a source with knowledge of the conversations.”

The Blue Jays showed serious interest in Bregman this winter. Previously, he was the team’s backup plan if Tucker and Bichette were absent, but that is no longer the case.
With the Blue Jays showing interest in Bregman and seeking a contract from his agent, the likelihood of the Blue Jays landing a top free agent increases.
However, they can only acquire one of these top free agents. Tucker and Bichette would be waived if they signed Bregman, unless one of their free-agent markets collapses after the Blue Jays sign Bregman.

Toronto may be looking for a left-handed bat, but Bregman would be a perfect fit, sliding into the third base spot and allowing Ernie Clement to move to second.
If the Blue Jays end up going Bregman’s route instead of Tucker and Bichette, the top free agents on the market won’t have a significant amount of the Blue Jays’ salary to back up their offers.
Their interest in Bregman is an interesting question this offseason. As the favorite for Tucker, a Bregman trade could significantly change this winter’s free agency market.
The former Houston Astros and Boston Red Sox third baseman is a realistic option for the Blue Jays, and if he does sign a free agent deal, Toronto will likely exit the market for Tucker and Bichette.
