Respawn Entertainment is developing a third Star Wars Jedi Legends game, publisher Electronic Arts confirmed on Tuesday. During its 2024 Investor Day conference, EA revealed that the developer is working on the “final chapter” of Jedi Knight Cal Kestis’ story. The third Star Wars Jedi game will conclude the trilogy, which includes 2019’s Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and last year’s Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.
A third Star Wars Jedi game is in development
At the meeting, EA Entertainment and Technology President Laura Miele talked about the projects being developed by the company’s studios and confirmed that the development of the third part of “Star Wars Jedi” has begun. “Respawn is working hard to bring the final chapter of this exciting story to players,” she said. However, the executive did not reveal any details about the game’s release schedule.
Miele also detailed EA’s partnership with Lucasfilm and Star Wars, saying the publisher has launched “some of the highest quality and best-selling Star Wars games ever, with net bookings exceeding $5 billion (approximately Rs. 41,861 crore)”.
“This impressive track record certainly includes the Star Wars Jedi Knight games, where more than 40 million Star Wars fans have connected with Kal Kestis and his trajectory to become a powerful Jedi Knight,” she added.
In 2013, EA received an exclusive 10-year license to make Star Wars games for consoles and PC, and has since produced the popular Star Wars: Battlefront game, the space combat action game Star Wars: Squadrons, and two games in the Star Wars Jedi series. However, EA no longer has the exclusive rights to make Star Wars video games.
Star Wars Jedi Trilogy
Before Star Wars Jedi: Survivors launched, game director Stig Asmussen said that he had always viewed Kal Kestis’ story as a trilogy. Asmussen directed the first two games in the trilogy before leaving Respawn to form his own studio.
While this is the first time EA has confirmed the development of a sequel to Jedi Left Behind, at Comic-Con in September 2023, actor Cameron Monaghan, who provided the voice, likeness, and action narration for Star Wars Jedi protagonist Kal Kestis, said that a third game in the trilogy is in development. “We’re working on a third one. We’re doing it right now,” Monahan reportedly said. “It’s a big undertaking and there have been some conversations so far, but hopefully when it’s all said and done, we’ll be able to make some really cool stuff for you guys again.”
The Star Wars Jedi series tells the coming-of-age story of Cal Kestis, a former Padawan who survived the Purge as a young Jedi and embarked on a long journey to rebuild the Order with the help of his friends, eventually becoming a powerful Jedi. Star Wars Jedi: Survivors is the second game in the trilogy, released last year on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X. The game finally launched on PS4 and Xbox One on Tuesday.
