How to Upgrade the PS4 Hard Drive

Your PlayStation 4 console comes with a 500GB hard drive, but that’s not enough for video games on PS4. Most Windows laptops these days come with 1 TB or more of RAM, and considering most games take up around 50 GB each, you can’t help but feel like just 500 GB is a little less. This handy guide shows you how to replace the 500GB hard drive that comes with your PS4 for something more practical. No, doing so won’t void your warranty; Sony says so in the manual that comes with the console.

You can use a solid-state drive (SSD) or a hybrid drive, but we recommend sticking with standard 5,400rpm laptop drives, as other drives aren’t officially supported by Sony. Once you’ve got motivation, you’re ready to get started.

  1. First, follow the instructions on how to back up PS4 games and data.

  2. After backing up your data, turn off your PS4 and unplug it from the power source.

  3. The PS4 hard drive bay is located underneath the smooth part of the console. Push up to remove.
  4. You will notice a PlayStation brand screw (pictured below), use a screwdriver to remove it.

  5. Pull the HDD toward the front of the system to remove it.

  6. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws (four).

  7. Do not remove the rubber insert from the screw hole.

  8. Place the replacement hard drive on the mounting bracket and secure it with the screws (four places). Be careful not to make them too tight.

  9. Attach the hard drive to the system using the screws, making sure it is fully inserted into the hard drive bay.

  10. Reinstall your PS4’s system software (instructions here).

  11. Now, you can copy data previously backed up via pen drive to PS4 after turning it on. Remember, you must be logged in with the same PSN account you used when you first copied your saved data:

  • Connect the USB storage device to the system.
  • choose set up from the screen.
  • Go to Application saved data management > Data saved on USB storage device > Copy to system storage.
  • Choose a title.
  • Press X to add a checkmark to the checkbox of the saved data you want to copy, then select copy.

You’re excited to get back to playing games on your PS4. There is now more storage space.
