The Miami Dolphins’ 7-10 season in 2025 has resulted in a large number of job losses.
General manager Chris Grier was fired in late October amid the team’s 2-7 start, and general manager Mike McDaniel received his pink slip Thursday. Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is expected to be replaced, and the Dolphins will undoubtedly replace the vast majority of their coaching staff.

What went wrong?
These eight statistics tell the story of the Dolphins’ poor year, and some of the positives they can achieve under the new regime:
24 turnovers
Tagovailoa’s completion percentage of 67.7% is down from the NFL-leading 72.9% in 2024, but not far from his career average of 68%. His total of 20 touchdown passes isn’t too small either.
What cost him his job was his inability to avoid mistakes.
Tagovailoa has a career-high 15 interceptions in 14 games, second only to Geno Smith in the NFL. The Dolphins quarterback also fumbled the ball eight times, which ranked tied for sixth.

Overall, the Miami offense’s 24 total turnovers ranked fourth in the NFL.
81 points in the third quarter unanswered
In an October win over the Atlanta Falcons, Tagovailoa connected with Jaylen Waddle for a 43-yard touchdown in the third quarter to make it 24-3. That was the last time the Dolphins scored in the third quarter.
It feels impossible, but the Dolphins scored zero points in the first 15 minutes of the second half of their last game. Nine game. Between Weeks 9 and 18, they were outscored 81-0 in that frame.
The Dolphins were never able to get back on track after halftime, which may have been a big reason why McDaniel was fired.

4.7 yards per attempt
Even though the Dolphins’ investment at the linebacker position mostly blew up in their faces, the running game got back on track. With James Daniels out for all but the first three snaps of the year and Jonah Savaiinaea running the NFL’s worst offense, the Dolphins ranked fourth in the league with 4.7 yards per carry. In the 2024 season, Miami averaged 4.0 yards per rush attempt, ranking fourth from the bottom.
De’Von Achane gained 1,838 yards from scrimmage
Miami’s efficiency in the running game is largely due to Archaon taking his production to an elite level.
Akan’s 5.7 yards per carry ranked first in the NFL and he finished the season with 1,350 yards rushing and 488 yards receiving. His 1,838 yards from scrimmage are the second-most in a single season in Dolphins history.

Backup running backs Jaylen Wright and Ollie Gordon averaged 4.1 and 2.8 yards per carry, respectively. With the exception of Acha, all Dolphins players average a combined 3.6 points per game.
Allowed 4.8 yards per attempt
As effective as the rushing attack led by Akan was, the Dolphins were almost as ineffective.
In 2025, only four teams have more yards per carry than the Dolphins. Along the way, Miami held seven opponents to at least 150 rushing yards, including two teams with over 200 yards.
183 Jordin Brooks tackle
Like Akan on offense, the clear bright spot on defense for the Dolphins is Brooks.

His 99 solo tackles and 183 total tackles both led the NFL. Brooks added 13 tackles, 3.5 sacks, three pass deflections and one forced fumble. While that wasn’t enough to earn Pro Bowl recognition by some means, it solidified Brooks’ status as the leader of the Dolphins’ defense.
3 or more touchdowns resulting in 5 losses
If dolphins hadn’t been blown out of the water so many times, perhaps more jobs would have been saved. In the losing half, Miami trailed so thoroughly that owner Stephen Ross had no choice but to feel “a sweeping change” was necessary.
The Dolphins have allowed more than 21 points in losses to the Colts, Browns, Ravens, Bengals and Patriots.

Allow 20 fourth down conversions
The Dolphins’ defense was one of eight to allow at least 20 success on their opponents’ fourth downs. Seven other teams all faced at least 32 possessions, but the Miami Heat allowed that to happen on just 28 fourth down possessions.
What does this tell us? The Dolphins managed to stay connected throughout the game, but the defense couldn’t make big plays.
Dolphins opponents rushed 11 of 28 fourth down attempts, averaging 7 yards per carry. When opposing quarterbacks drop back, they complete 80 percent of their passes and have a passer rating of 121.7.
