The San Francisco 49ers have a lot of roster questions to answer this offseason. So far in the first week of free agency, two big questions have been answered: wide receiver and the interior defensive line.

Wide receiver Mike Evans and defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa, both now with the 49ers, are huge additions to the team. However, there’s still a major need that needs to be addressed, and it’s no clearer than it is now with Bryce Huff retiring.
As The Athletic’s Vic Tafur writes, the 49ers’ biggest need is a pass rusher. That need has become even more urgent with Huff’s unexpected retirement. The 49ers not only need another pass rusher to pair with Nick Bosa; They need depth at the position, too.
The 49ers’ biggest need is obviously a pass rusher.
“Not only did the 49ers not add a pass rusher in the first week of free agency, they also lost one when 2025 sack leader Bryce Huff (with four…yes, four) suddenly retired at age 27 on Thursday to start a company building safety infrastructure for the use of lithium batteries,” Tafur wrote.

The 49ers’ biggest need is obviously a pass rusher after losing 2025 sack leader Huff, who only managed 4 sacks among the 49ers’ league-worst 20 sacks (three fewer than Myles Garrett himself).
They already had to address that issue heading into the offseason, and now, the 49ers’ need has become even more urgent.
Besides Nick Bosa, the 49ers’ only edge defenders are Mikel Williams, Keon White, Sam Okwainonu, William Bradley-King, Andrew Farmer II and Jalen Graham.
This is not a good enough edge defensive group. Depth is questionable, and there’s a distinct lack of pass-rushing upside outside of Bosa.

Fortunately, there are still some options on the free agent market that have yet to be officially signed that the 49ers can look to acquire.
Haason Reddick, Joey Bosa, DeNico Autry, Cameron Jordan, Von Miller, AJ Epenesa, Kyle Van Noy, Jadeveon Clowney and Anfernee Jennings are some of the top options still available in free agency.
The 49ers may also look to sign a young pass rusher in the first or second round of the 2026 NFL Draft. While there’s a big need for future wide receivers and a potentially huge hole at left tackle, the 49ers can’t rely on the draft to address that need.

John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan, along with defensive coordinator Raheem Morris, will need to find at least one pass rusher to add to the free agent roster this offseason.
It would be fun to reunite Bosa with his brother. However, no matter how the 49ers do it, they will need to add more pass-rushing help to the team this offseason.
