3 dead, 6 hurt after car hits bicyclist and crashes into Los Angeles grocery store

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A car collided with a cyclist and then crashed into a grocery store in Los Angeles on Thursday afternoon, killing three people and injuring six others, authorities said.

The incident occurred shortly after noon at the 99 Ranch Market in the city’s Westwood neighborhood, Los Angeles Fire Department spokesperson Lyndsey Lantz said.

Three victims, some of whom were trapped under the vehicle, died at the scene, Lantz said.

A subsequent incident report from the fire department said four people were taken to hospital, two with serious injuries and two with minor injuries. Two others refused to take transport despite medical advice.

Police Lt. Anthony Espinoza said the driver of a Toyota Prius lost control after hitting the cyclist and swerving into the market’s bakery section.

Officials at the scene said the driver, a woman, is cooperating with investigators and is undergoing a medical evaluation. The condition of the cyclist was unclear at this time.

Television news footage showed a silver sedan with its trunk fully open inside the Westwood Avenue store.

Police and fire departments responded massively, setting up a triage area outside the store to treat patients.

The accident occurred near the UCLA campus. Espinoza said none of the dead or injured were college students.
