potential for chaos
Data originally published by Bob Vetrone Jr. on Twitter In 2020 I will be adding my own content for future seasons.
The Atlantic 10 tournament is known as one of the most unpredictable tournaments. However, since the NCAA expanded the field to 68 players in 2011, second seeds have been excluded. George Mason failed to break that record in 2025, but VCU, which defeated the Patriots in overtime last March, got its chance in 2026. Note that the opponents in the 2024 finals are the No. 5 and No. 6 seeds.
-
1 seed(4): 2013, 2021, 2023, 2025
-
4 seeds(4): 2012, 2014, 2016, 2017
-
No. 6 Seed(3): 2019, 2022, 2024
NCAA bid totals in the 68-team era
-
6 bids(1): 2014 (4-6 record, 13 teams)
-
5 bids(1): 2013 (7-5 record, 16 teams)
-
4 bids(1): 2012 (3-4 record, 14 teams)
-
3 bids(5): 2011 (3-3 record, 14 teams), 2015 (2-3, 14), 2016 (2-3, 14), 2017 (1-3, 14), 2018 (2-3, 14)
-
2 bids(4): 2019 (0-2 record, 14 teams), 2021 (0-1, 14), 2022 (1-2, 14), 2024 (2-2, 15)
-
1 bid(2): 2023 (0-1 record, 15 teams), 2025 (0-1, 15 teams)
The Atlantic 10 has finished with two teams in just three of the last five NCAA Tournament games. To make matters worse, VCU is unable to play the 2021 game against Oregon State due to coronavirus concerns. With the quality of the 2026 bubble, the Rams should join St. Louis in a third bid that could provide some surprises.

Last conference tournament champion
Voltage control unit: 2025 (No. 1 seed)
Duquesne: 2024 (6th seed)
Loyola Chicago: 2022 (No. 4 seed, MVC)
Richmond: 2022 (No. 6 seed)
St. Bonaventure: 2021 (No. 1 seed)
St. Louis: 2019 (No. 6 seed)
Davidson: 2018 (No. 3 seed)
Rhode Island: 2017 (No. 4 seed)
St. Joseph: 2016 (No. 4 seed)
George Mason: 2008 (No. 3 seed, CAA)
George Washington: 2005 (No. 1 seed in the West)
Dayton: 2003 (No. 2 seed in the West)
Fordham: 1992 (No. 1 seed, Patriot League)
Lasalle: 1992 (No. 2 seed, MAAC)
Fordham, George Mason, LaSalle and Loyola Chicago are the only members of the Atlantic 10 who have yet to win a conference tournament. Dayton last won in 2003, but if it were held in 2020, the Flyers would be the favorite because they would likely be the NCAA’s No. 1 seed.
