A Bronx man was charged in the fatal shooting of New York Jets cornerback Chris Boyd late Monday night after authorities said they found him through an “intensive manhunt” that ended in Buffalo.

Fredrick Green, 20, was taken into custody Monday night and charged with attempted murder, assault and unlawful possession of a weapon in connection with a shooting in Manhattan in the early morning hours of June 16, the New York Police Department announced Tuesday.

Boyd was shot in the abdomen and was hospitalized in critical condition. He has since been released from the hospital and rejoined the Jets last week, about two weeks after the shooting, to visit teammates.

U.S. Marshals and the U.S. Department of Justice announced earlier Tuesday that on Monday they tracked down a then-unnamed “person of interest” suspected to be Boyd’s shooter. The NYPD has identified the suspect as Green and charged him in Boyd’s shooting.

Law enforcement officials believe Greene fled New York City after the shooting to evade capture, according to the Justice Department. Investigators found Green in Buffalo early Monday and arrested him on the second floor of an apartment building near the University at Buffalo, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

Green surrendered after law enforcement officers surrounded the building, according to the Justice Department. Officials said they searched for the gun used in the shooting but did not find it.

Greene, who was taken into custody by the New York Police Department on Tuesday, has not responded to the charges against him and it is not known if he has a lawyer, the Associated Press reported.

Late night confrontation leads to shooting

The shooting occurred around 2 a.m. Sunday during a confrontation outside the Manhattan restaurant, according to law enforcement officials. Police said Boyd was out with two of his Jets teammates, Owen Charles and Jamion Sherwood, when a group of men approached them and made fun of what they were wearing.

A fight ensued, resulting in Boyd being shot, according to police. Boyd was taken to the hospital in critical condition and had a bullet lodged in his lung before being removed, law enforcement officials told ABC News. The incident occurred on the Jets’ off day last Thursday night against the New England Patriots.

The 29-year-old Boyd is a veteran of six seasons in the NFL. He joined the Jets in the offseason as a backup cornerback and special teams ace. Boyd did not play for the Jets this season due to a shoulder injury that required surgery.
