Washington (washington dc news now) — An overnight fire in southeast Washington, D.C., left three people homeless and injured two firefighters, officials said.

Firefighters on scene found fire on both floors of the house, and the residents had been safely evacuated outside.

Despite their injuries, the firefighters were not trapped and were able to reach safety. Rescuers took them to hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries.
However, a second firefighter was also taken to the hospital and reported minor injuries, officials said.
The distress signal triggered a second alarm, and about 20 units and 100 personnel rushed to the scene. Crews were able to extinguish the flames that had spread into the attic of the attached home.
No other injuries were reported, but three residents of both homes were displaced, according to the fire department.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
