High-speed chase ends in violent collision
Backstory
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the lead investigative agency, began a pursuit in Harris County before the suspect led deputies on a dangerous road into Montgomery County.
The suspect reportedly reached speeds of up to 145 mph as the pursuit crossed county lines in the early hours of the morning. Law enforcement officials said several pursuing units temporarily lost visual contact with the vehicle.
At this point, the Splendora Police Department’s Criminal Interdiction Unit (CIU) became involved. The Splendora forces manage to reestablish contact and dominate the manhunt.
Police eventually deployed tire deflation devices, but the suspect refused to exit. Although the vehicle’s tires were cracked and its undercarriage was on fire, the driver continued on. The chase eventually ended when the burning vehicle crashed into a ravine near the San Jacinto River.
Assistance was provided by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Montgomery County 4th Precinct Constable’s Office, Texas Department of Public Safety (including air support) and the Splendora Police Department.
Suspect found self-inflicted
When officers arrived at the wreckage, they detained the suspect and immediately called emergency medical services. The suspect was later found to have a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his jaw.
The individual, who was wanted for previous escape incidents and had an extensive history of fleeing police, was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries. The vehicle was destroyed by fire and was a total loss.
Law enforcement has not released the suspect’s name.
