Xiaomi 17 and Xiaomi 17 Pro First Impressions

Xiaomi’s new 17 series made its debut in China a few weeks ago. The series includes three models: Mi 17, Mi 17 Pro and Mi 17 Pro Max. It is expected to debut in India in early 2026. While the India launch may still be weeks or months away, Xiaomi India has sent the Chinese versions of the Mi 17 and Mi 17 Pro to technology shout for a quick sneak peek. That’s why we believe this will be the company’s biggest launch in recent years. First of all, all three models of the Xiaomi Mi 17 series are powered by Qualcomm’s top-of-the-line Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 mobile platform. Xiaomi has launched three models to cater to users looking for different screen sizes, ranging from 6.3 inches to 6.9 inches. What are the key points worth paying attention to in the upcoming Xiaomi Mi 17 series? We break it down in this article.

Mi 17 and Mi 17 Pro: big upgrades

design

One of the biggest attractions of the new Mi 17 and Mi 17 Pro is the design. The Xiaomi Mi 17 weighs 191 grams, which is lighter than products like the Google Pixel 10 Pro. Thanks to its compact design, the Xiaomi Mi 17 fits perfectly into the new league of compact smartphones, which includes OnePlus 13s, Vivo X200 FE and more.

Both phones feature 6.3-inch displays

On the other hand, the Xiaomi Mi 17 Pro weighs 192 grams and is 8 mm thick, beating the iPhone 17 Pro in both weight (206 grams) and slim profile (8.8 mm). The compact design provides an ergonomic grip, and the rounded corners provide a more refined feel.

The rear and frame of Xiaomi Mi 17 feature a frosted glass look that looks sophisticated and elegant. The smudge-free rear design is a great addition. 17 comes in four colors: black, blue, pink and white. We chose black because of first impression. Both phones receive an IP68 dust and water resistance rating.

The 17 Pro is launched in four colors: black, white, purple, and green. For first impression we chose purple, this color looks more elegant. The biggest highlight of the 17 Pro design is undoubtedly the rear display.

Xiaomi Mi 17 uses a 6.3-inch LTPO AMOLED display with a pixel density of 464 PPI, a refresh rate of 120Hz, supports HDR10+, a screen-to-body ratio of 89.5%, and a peak brightness of 3500 nits. It’s worth noting that the Xiaomi Mi 17 Pro has accurate display specs; however, the secondary display takes center stage. The back display uses a 2.7-inch screen with a resolution of 572×904 pixels and a peak brightness of 3500 nits.

Xiaomi claims that the 17 functions of the M10 display panel and SuperRED luminescent material represent a technological breakthrough, bringing more advanced luminous efficiency.

On the other hand, Xiaomi Mi 17 Pro also uses the same display technology. In addition, Xiaomi said that the 17 Pro Max uses independent pixel array technology to achieve clearer clarity and lower power consumption than traditional 2K displays. The top-of-the-range Mi 17 Pro Max also comes with Mi Shield Glass 3.0.

The Xiaomi Mi 17 is the company’s flagship smartphone series, and its cameras seemed incredible in the limited testing we did. We can learn more about the cameras when we get our hands on the Mi 17 and 17 Pro at Indian retail stores.

Performance

The performance department is one of the 17 and 17 Pro’s biggest strengths. Both are powered by the 3nm-based Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, a chipset that is too powerful for daily use. From gaming to multitasking and photo or video editing, the 17 series is impressive, but we’ll take a closer look at how these devices will perform when they launch in India.

Battery

The 17 comes with a large 7000mAh battery, while the 17 Pro comes with a 6300mAh battery. Both phones support 100W wired charging and 50W wireless charging in China. It will be interesting to see if these phones have the same wired charging speeds in India. For a limited time, we tested both phones. The 17 easily lasted over a day, while the 17 Pro lasted about a day. However, we’ll reserve judgment on the battery until we receive the Indian unit for testing.

Xiaomi Mi 17 Pro’s back display works like magic

What Xiaomi calls the dynamic back display on the 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max is an incredible addition to the flagships and will make them stand out among high-end phones in India. You can get customizable watch faces, AI wallpapers, virtual pets, dynamic message notifications, notes, and more.

The 2.7-inch secondary display is a handy addition

You can also use the back display to receive real-time notifications from food delivery apps, ride-hailing apps, music streaming services, and view flight details. Additionally, you can use it as a viewfinder and the rear camera as a selfie shooter. When you add dual displays, there are so many possibilities, and one of the best uses is as a clock face to keep you updated.

In China, Xiaomi Mi 17 Pro is available in 12GB + 256GB, 12GB + 512GB, 16GB + 512GB and 16GB RAM + 1TB variants

Mi 17 and Mi 17 Pro expected price in India

The Mi 17 series is expected to debut in India early next year and we can expect the pricing to be very aggressive, just like Xiaomi has been with its smartphones for years. Looking at the launch prices in China, the 17 starts at CNY 4,499 (roughly Rs. 56,000), while the 17 Pro starts at CNY 4,999 (roughly Rs. 62,000). The top-of-the-range Mi 17 Pro Max is priced starting at CNY 5,999 (roughly Rs. 75,000) in China. Of course, these are Chinese prices converted to Indian prices, so we can’t expect prices to stay around these points.
