Will Mikel Brown Jr. play in Louisville basketball game vs Syracuse?

Mikel Brown Jr. was downgraded from possible to a game-time decision with a back injury in Louisville basketball’s loss to Clemson last weekend and gave up his starting job, playing just 21 minutes. On Monday morning, Pat Kelsey said his star freshman point guard was “a little burned out.”

Brown was listed as out against the Orange on the ACC’s preliminary injury report released Monday night. The meeting will release its final report at 7pm on Tuesday.

Brown missed eight games between December 16 and January 17 with back problems. Between January 24 and February 23, he averaged a team-high 21.1 points in 10 games with a 43.4% three-point shooting rate, but against the Tigers, he only scored 5 points on 2-for-10 shooting (0-for-6 from 3-point range) and had 4 assists with two turnovers.

Kelsey said Brown “took some really, really bad falls” during Louisville’s loss to then-No. 1 team. 19 “Definitely not 100 percent” against Clemson on Feb. 23 against North Carolina.

“That’s something I’ve been talking to him about: less falls,” the coach said Monday. “He got to the rim so bravely. He took some hits, too. I probably shouldn’t say that, but he probably deserved more than some of the calls he got. But I guess, that’s part of being a freshman, maybe earning your stripes.”

This season, Brown averaged 29 minutes per game, scored 18.2 points, shot 41% from the field (34.4% from three-point range), contributed 3.3 rebounds, 1.2 steals and a team-high 4.7 assists (3.1 turnovers).

After Tuesday’s game against Syracuse, the Cards will close out the regular season Saturday at 2 p.m. at No. 23 Miami.
