According to a report by network analysis company Ookla, Vi (formerly known as Vodafone Idea) became India’s fastest 4G mobile operator in the third quarter of this year, and Jio leads the 4G availability list among top service providers. According to the report, data transmission speeds vary among the largest cities in the United States, and Hyderabad had the fastest mobile network download experience in the third quarter. Ookla pointed out that the average download speed of the country’s mobile network increased by 11.6% year-on-year.
According to a report released by Ookla, Vi’s average download speed in the third quarter was 13.74Mbps, and the average upload speed was 6.19Mbps. Airtel followed Vi with an average download speed of 13.58Mbps and an average upload speed of 4.15Mbps. Jio’s average download speed in the third quarter was 9.71Mbps, and the upload speed was 3.41Mbps, ranking third.

Regarding regional performance, the Ookla report pointed out that in the third quarter, mobile download speeds were different between the largest cities in India. Hyderabad leads the game with an average download speed on the mobile network of 14.35%, followed by Mumbai (13.55Mbps) and Visakhapatnam (13.40Mbps). Delhi ranks sixth among the Indian cities that offer the highest download speed, with an average speed of 13.04Mbps.

According to data obtained from the Speedtest app on Android, Ookla mentioned that India led the 4G availability among the largest countries in South Asia in the third quarter, with 94.7% of the test locations showing 4G availability. Bangladesh and Pakistan closely follow India, with 4G availability rates of 78.6% and 72.9%, respectively.
India’s growth was mainly contributed by Jio, which led 4G availability at 99.7% in the third quarter. In the same period, Airtel was followed by 49.7% of the tested locations providing 4G services, while Vi India ranked third with 91.1% of the tested locations.
According to Ookla, despite its leadership in 4G availability, India lags behind Pakistan in terms of average download speeds on mobile networks in the third quarter. Pakistan’s download speed is 39.7% faster than India, Bangladesh’s download speed ranks third and upload speed ranks second. This means that the average upload speed in India is even lower than Bangladesh, at 4.18Mbps.
Nevertheless, between the third quarter of last year and this year, the average download speed of Indian mobile networks has increased. The report stated that download speeds in Pakistan increased by 24.1% during the same period.
Ookla said: “Among the largest countries in South Asia, upload speeds have remained basically stable, and only Pakistan has improved year-on-year.”
India ranked 131st in the September Ookla Mobile Internet Speed Speedtest Global Index, with an average mobile download speed of 12.07Mbps. The country’s neighbors rank first on the list, China ranks second, Sri Lanka ranks 102th, even Pakistan ranks 116th, and Nepal ranks 117th.
