Hilary Knight, captain of the U.S. women’s ice hockey team, not only won a gold medal at the 2026 Winter Olympics with three goals and three assists. She did so with a torn medial collateral ligament in her knee.
Host Gayle King revealed the injury during an interview with “CBS Morning News” on Monday.
“Yeah, I’m a little bit injured,” said Knight, 36. “I’m not the best player and I’ve missed a couple games with the Seattle Torrents right now.”
“But being able to compete through injury was definitely a mental gymnastics challenge for myself as well as a physical challenge,” she added. “But we have some great support staff who do their best to get me out there and perform at my best.”
Knight, 36, scored the game-tying goal with two minutes remaining in the U.S. gold medal game against Canada. The United States won 2-1 in overtime.

As Knight mentioned, she plays for the Seattle Torrents of the PWHL. The team has played 15 games in the 2025-26 season and achieved a record of 5 wins and 10 losses. Knight was placed on long-term injured reserve by the Torrents upon his return from Milan Cortina, as were Olympians Kendall Coy Schofield (USA) and Erin Ambrose (Canada).
