US gold medal-winning captain Hilary Knight reveals she played at the Olympics with a torn MCL

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. women’s hockey gold medal-winning captain Hilary Knight revealed on television Monday that she tore the medial collateral ligament in one knee while competing in Milan.

“I didn’t become my best player, and I missed a couple games with the Seattle Torrents,” Knight said on “CBS Mornings.”

“Being able to compete through injury is definitely a mental gymnastics challenge for myself, as well as physically, but we have some great support staff who are doing their best to get me out there and performing at my best – to the best of my ability.”

Knight, who said this was her last Olympics at age 36, was tied with Canada in the final with just over two minutes remaining. Knight, teammate Kendall Coy Schofield and Canada’s Erin Ambrose were all placed on long-term injured reserve by their respective PWHL teams when the season resumes.

Knight and U.S. men’s gold medalists Jack and Quinn Hughes will appear on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” on Monday night. It’s been 48 hours since their unforgettable cameo on Saturday Night Live alongside female golden goal scorer Megan Keller.

Jack Hughes also scored in overtime to beat Canada, just as Keller had done three days earlier. The men’s gold medal was the country’s first since the 1980 “Miracle on Ice” in Lake Placid.

Jack of the New Jersey Devils and Quinn of the Minnesota Wild have returned to NHL games. The Devils gave Jack a day off from practice before joining Knight for Fallon’s show, which is expected to be the final stop on a whirlwind media tour for the brothers as they return to North America.
