United flight returns to LA airport for an evacuation after a reported fire

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A United Airlines flight returned to Los Angeles Airport for an emergency evacuation about 40 minutes after takeoff following a reported fire, authorities said.

Following recommendations from the Federal Aviation Administration, all flights at Los Angeles International Airport were ordered to remain on the ground for about half an hour during flight returns and evacuations. No injuries were reported.

The flight was scheduled to fly to Newark, New Jersey, before returning to Los Angeles to resolve a possible engine fire, the airline said in a statement. The Los Angeles Fire Department said it responded and the fire was under control an hour after the plane landed.

The flight took off at 10:43 a.m., began returning around 11 a.m., and landed again at 11:19 a.m., according to flight tracker FlightAware.

The Los Angeles Fire Department said it assisted in the evacuation of more than 250 passengers and crew. The airline said passengers left the plane on a taxiway via slides and stairs and were taken to the terminal.

The aircraft was a Boeing 787-9, a variant of the popular 787 Dreamliner series of long-haul aircraft.
