UGA students alarmed by rapes on 2 straight days

A suspect has been arrested in connection with the weekend kidnapping and rape of a University of Georgia student off campus.

Police are still searching for a suspect who sexually assaulted another student in an unrelated attack the day before

Students at the University of Georgia said they first learned of the spate of off-campus sexual assaults against fellow students through security alerts issued by university administrators and police.

“We just received a campus-wide security notification saying safety is our top priority and they are investigating the case,” one student said.

The first incident happened Friday in the area of Cleveland Avenue and Barber Street.

Police say a man attacked and raped a 22-year-old student. He then took her wallet, credit cards, iPhone and Apple Watch.

Less than 24 hours later, at around 2am on Saturday, a 20-year-old student was followed home and raped behind a building.

Police said they used a downtown camera tracking system to arrest Tydarius Wingfield, 19, of Athens. He was charged with rape, aggravated sexual assault and kidnapping.

More students said they were arming themselves with pepper spray to ward off attackers.

Police said they are still working to identify the suspect who attacked the student on Friday.
