Tuesday Cheese Curds: Bears rivalry finally relevant again

It might be silly that the Packers are playing the Bears for the first time this season, but at least this game is important.

I’m a firm believer that things get better when the Packers/Bears games matter, but for a long time, that wasn’t the case. The Bears are the Packers’ oldest rival, and functionally, they may be the Packers’ only rival. The Lions and Vikings don’t have the same place in history as the Packers or Bears. None of them have any legacy of success, and while the Lions are a fairly old team, the Vikings, at least in terms of the overall age of the NFL, are still relatively new compared to the Packers and Bears.

But Green Bay and Chicago both have a century of history, and that history is what matters most when both teams are playing well. Whether the Bears are actually playing well is a point of debate, but you can’t argue with the standings. Chicago currently leads the NFC North. They are the barrier between where the Packers are now and where they want to be. The process of removing this obstacle will begin on Sunday.

This adds some much-needed interest to what has been a bland pairing for much of the past decade, which is a very welcome change.

The Lions’ era of dominance in the NFC North is over, at least for this year. Now it’s up to the Packers and Bears to decide who comes out on top.
