Justin Verlander’s return to the Detroit Tigers didn’t get off to the fairytale start many had hoped for when the signing was announced in February, with the veteran getting bombarded in his season debut, allowing five earned runs and two walks in 3.2 innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The next game is an even bigger one for Verlander and Detroit fans as he was scheduled to return to UnionSport Park with the Tigers on Sunday night for the first time since the 2017 season, but that will be put on hold.
On Saturday afternoon, it was announced that the 43-year-old will be on the 15-day IL due to left hip inflammation.
This will be a definite loss for Detroit, who have struggled this season and are 3-4 heading into Friday night’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Who will replace Verlander in the Tigers rotation?
Meanwhile, the Tigers announced Cade Montero will replace the three-time Cy Young Award winner. Montero, who has been playing for the Toledo Mud Hens, Detroit’s Triple-A affiliate, went four innings in one game, allowing one hit and fanning three batters.

The Venezuelan was a member of the Tigers last season, appearing in 20 games with a 4.37 ERA and 1.39 WHIP.
The Tigers will face the Cardinals on Saturday afternoon and will wrap up the series on Sunday night, with the first game scheduled for 7:20 p.m.
