Severe thunderstorms and heavy rain could bring damaging winds, large hail and flash flooding to New Jersey starting Sunday afternoon, forecasters said.
The storm is expected to move into northwest New Jersey between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. before spreading southeastward to the rest of the state around 10 p.m.
“Scattered severe thunderstorms are possible across the region this afternoon and evening,” the National Weather Service said early Sunday. “Damaging winds and hail up to 2 inches in diameter will be the primary threats.”
The storm is expected to weaken as it moves east across the state. Nearly all of New Jersey is under a “marginal” risk (Level 1 of 5) of severe weather.

Rainfall amounts of up to 1 inch may occur in a short period of time.
“Heavy rainfall tonight into tonight may cause localized flash flooding,” the weather service said. “This is likely along and north of Interstate 95.”
Ahead of the storm, temperatures will be in the 60s to 70s across much of the state today, but cooler conditions will be expected along the Jersey Shore.
A cold front will move through the state tonight, with rain likely to continue for several hours in its wake.
For most areas, rainfall will taper off around sunrise on Monday.
Monday will be significantly cooler. Temperatures will peak before dawn and then settle in the upper 40s to lower 50s for much of the day.
Wind speeds will be between 25 and 35 mph throughout Monday afternoon and evening.
Tuesday is expected to be sunny with temperatures in the upper 40s to lower 50s.
Clouds will increase on Wednesday and temperatures will drop to around 50 degrees.
Another storm system could bring showers Thursday into Friday, but timing and details remain uncertain.
