Thomas’ 2nd goal of the game leads Blues to a 2-1 overtime win over Sharks

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Robert Thomas scored his second goal of the game 54 seconds into overtime and the St. Louis Blues beat the San Jose Sharks 3-2 on Friday night, hours after trading captain Brayden Schenn.

Thomas scored on the rebound of Filip Broberg’s shot, giving him four goals in three games since returning from injury.

The Blues were last in the Western Conference standings heading into the trade deadline and were looking toward the future after trading Schenn to the New York Islanders and guard Justin Faulk to Detroit.

That left St. Louis with just five healthy defensemen against the Sharks, but the Blues still won three in a row. Jimmy Snugrude also scored and Jordan Binnington made 23 saves.

Kiefer Sherwood tied the game for San Jose in the third period when he beat Binnington with a single in the circle. It’s been an eventful week for Sherwood, who scored the game-winner against Montreal on Tuesday, his first with the Sharks, before signing a five-year, $28.75 million contract extension on Wednesday.

McLean Celebrini also scored for the Sharks.

Alex Nedelkovic made 11 saves after signing a two-year, $6 million contract extension earlier in the day.

There were two battles in the first period but not much else as the Blues opened the scoring with Snagrud’s 11th goal of the season and much of the remainder of the period was played at St. Louis Arena.

The Sharks tied the game in the second when Celebrini beat Binnington at the end of a power play and scored his 31st goal of the season.

But St. Louis got back on top late in the period after Snugrude won a puck battle with John Klingberg and set up Thomas.
