The 2024 Game Awards, held live Thursday at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, recognized the year’s best games across genres and paid tribute to the developers and creators in the industry. Team Asobi’s PS5 exclusive Astro Bot was named Game of the Year at the ceremony, while groundbreaking roguelike deck-building game Balatro won awards in three categories, including Best Launch Indie Game, Best Indie Game and Best Mobile Game.
We’ve already covered the show’s full list of winners separately, but in addition to the awards themselves, the event also included several big announcements, game reveals, and world premiere trailers. In addition to some expected updates, The Game Awards also had some truly surprising announcements, including FromSoftware’s new Elden Ring co-op game, a trailer for The Witcher 4, and a sneak preview of Naughty Dog’s next game.
As promised by 2K ahead of the event, both Borderlands 4 and Mafia: The Old Kingdom were shown off with sneak peek trailers; both games will be released in 2025. Hazelight Studios’ Josef Fares also revealed his next game, Split Fiction. Like It Takes Two, the game is a cooperative action-adventure game and is set to release on March 6. Here are the biggest announcements from The Game Awards 2024:
The Witcher 4
The Witcher 4 finally released a sneak peek trailer at the 2024 Game Awards. Developer CD Projekt Red has been working on a new The Witcher saga for years, and the cinematic trailer finally gives us a glimpse of the new chapter in the series. As previously rumored, Ciri has been confirmed as the protagonist of The Witcher 4. But you can hear Geralt’s voice at the end of the trailer, hinting that the Butcher of Blaviken may play a role. A release date for the game has not yet been confirmed, but it is expected to be available on PC and current-gen consoles.
Eldon Ring Night Walk
Miyazaki Hidetaka recently stated that FromSoftware has no plans for Elden Ring 2. It turns out he was right—sort of. Bandai Namco and FromSoftware have announced Elden Ring Nightreign, an indie co-op action survival game that challenges players to team up to defeat the Nightlord. The game is set in the familiar world of Elden Ring and features cooperative PvE combat. Players can form a team of three, or choose to fight tough bosses alone. Bandai Namco has called the game’s world “harsh and unforgiving”; evoking memories of walking out of Ringgrave and running into tree sentinels. Elden Ring Nightreign will launch on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series S/X, Xbox One and PC via Steam in 2025.
The outside world 2
“The Outer Worlds 2” was announced as early as 2021 at Xbox and Bethesda’s E3 show. At The Game Awards 2024, the long-awaited sequel finally received its first gameplay trailer, promising “more action, more weapons, and more graphics.” The Obsidian RPG will be set in the new colony of Arcadia. Players can also recruit a group of companions to help them complete their missions. The Outer Worlds 2 is available on Xbox Series S/X, PC (via Steam and the Xbox app on Windows), and PS5. The game will be available on Game Pass on day one.
schizophrenia
Hazelight Studios founder Josef Fares took to the stage at The Game Awards 2024, dropped some profanity and revealed his next game in style. “Split Fiction” is a two-player cooperative game where players can switch between science fiction and fantasy worlds to face different challenges together. As always, Fares promises that each level will feature unique gameplay mechanics and abilities, making Split Fiction’s gameplay a diverse experience. Split Fiction will be available on PC, PlayStation and Xbox on March 6, 2025.
Century plan
Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio is busy these days. The Japanese developer is preparing to release Yakuza spin-off Yakuza: Pirates of the Dragon in February 2025 in Hawaii. But the studio didn’t pause after that. At The Game Awards, RGG Studio announced two new games in development – a new Virtua Fighter game and an action game called Project Century. The trailer shows off a Yakuza -style action game filled with blood, a dense game world and a 1915 setting. The gameplay trailer shows off a grittier, darker game than RGG’s Yakuza series. Project of the Century doesn’t have a release date yet.
Onimusha: Kendo
Capcom’s beloved Onimusha series is about to make a comeback. The Japanese studio surprised everyone by releasing a trailer for Onimusha: Kendo. The action film’s trailer showcases brutal sword fights, challenging enemy encounters, and the rich backdrop of Kyoto, Japan’s historic capital during the Edo period. Onimusha: Kendo will be released on PC (via Steam), PS5, and Xbox Series S/X in 2026.
The sequel to The Great God
Eighteen years after Okami was released on PlayStation 2, Capcom and director Hideki Kamiya are returning for a sequel. Okami 2 made a surprise debut at The Game Awards, showcasing its signature beautiful ink art style, vibrant colors, evocative music and iconic White Wolf Amaterasu. There’s no release date for Okami 2 yet, and trailers suggest the game is still a few years away.
Interstellar: Prophet of Heresy
Naughty Dog is back with its next project, and no, it’s not a remake or remake of an old game. At the Game Awards, the studio announced for the first time that the PC version of The Last of Us Part II: Remastered will be available on April 3. But then, the show’s final announcement was a surprise reveal of the Sony-owned studio’s next game. “Star: Heretic Prophet” is a new series of games currently being developed for PS5. It is a science fiction action game with a retro-futuristic aesthetic. To put the icing on the cake, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross will score in this game.
There were plenty of other reveals and announcements at The Game Awards 2024, with showrunner, creator and host Geoff Keighley showcasing a range of upcoming games. The ceremony also featured trailers for sequels to “Slay the Spire” and “Dave the Diver.” On the other hand, Square Enix announced that the PC version of “Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth” will be launched on January 23, 2025. We also got a trailer for the next game from Fumito Ueda, the lead designer and director of Ico, Shadow of Wanda, and The Last Guardian. Although the game has not yet been named, the end credits hint at a possible codename – “Project Robot.”
