The A’s and Giants have the best robot-ump challenge rates in the first 10 days of spring

NEW YORK (AP) — The Athletics have had the highest success rate in overturning pitches/strike using a robotic officiating system through the first 10 days of spring training, winning 69.2 percent of their challenges as they prepare for their regular-season debut on March 25.

Major League Baseball said Monday that San Francisco was in second place with 66.7 percent, followed by Cincinnati, Miami and San Diego at 61.9 percent each.

The World Series champion Dodgers have the lowest winning percentage, winning 21.4 percent of the time on automated batting system appeals. Baltimore is at 25%, the New York Mets are at 35.3%, and Texas is at 38.1%.

MLB’s overall success rate is 51.3%, averaging 2.3 challenges per game.

The New York Yankees average the most challenges per game at 3.8 and have a winning percentage of 52.6%. Minnesota ranks second at 3.6 (58.3% winning percentage), followed by Boston at 3.2 (55.2%), Colorado (55.6%) and San Francisco at 3.0.

Baltimore has the lowest average number of challenges at 1.2. The Dodgers are at 1.4 and Detroit is at 1.5 (46.7%).

MLB experimented with ABS during spring training last year, and teams won 52.2 percent of pitch/bat challenges (617 of 1,182 challenges). MLB began testing it in the minor leagues in 2019.

Each team has the ability to challenge two calls per game. If successful, the team would retain its challenge, similar to the video review rule for major league teams, which was first used for home run calls in August 2008 and widely expanded for many calls during the 2014 season.

Teams tied after nine innings without a challenge will receive an additional challenge in each overtime period.
