Tennis Hall of Fame: Federer induction ceremony sells out in 2 minutes, watch party planned

NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) — The International Tennis Hall of Fame announced plans Wednesday to add an outdoor watch party to make room for thousands of fans, as tickets for Roger Federer’s induction ceremony sold out in two minutes.

“As a small and historic venue, our capacity is limited,” the hall said in a social media post.

The Hall of Fame said it is expected to be exciting for the first man to win 20 Grand Slam singles titles, who will be enshrined on August 29 at the Newport-based shrine along with broadcaster Mary Carillo. In addition to the 900 tickets initially available for the induction ceremony, the Hall will open its 3,600-seat arena for watch parties.

The tennis complex, housed in the 19th-century Newport Casino, recently underwent a $3 million renovation in preparation for the upcoming induction ceremony honoring Federer and Serena Williams, who will be ineligible to compete next year unless they return.
