According to CNBC, Oracle, the technology giant formerly headquartered in Silicon Valley, is laying off thousands of employees and plans to invest in artificial intelligence.

It’s unclear which positions and locations will be part of the layoffs, but CNBC reports the number of layoffs is in the “thousands.” An Oracle spokesperson told SFGATE that the company declined to comment.

The layoffs reportedly began early Tuesday, with workers caught off guard by the sudden email notification, Business Insider reported. The email, obtained by the outlet, stated that the layoffs were due to a company restructuring.

“We are sharing some difficult news about your position,” the email read. “After careful consideration of Oracle’s current business needs, we have decided to eliminate your role as part of broader organizational changes. As a result, today is your last day of work.”

As of press time, the California Employment Development Department had not responded to SFGATE’s request for any Oracle WARN filings, which are typically required in the event of mass layoffs.

Earlier this month, Bloomberg reported that Austin, Texas-based Oracle was preparing for large-scale layoffs to expand its artificial intelligence capabilities. According to the media report, Oracle is planning to build new data centers to increase the artificial intelligence workload of customers such as OpenAI.

The company reportedly conducted another round of layoffs last year, eliminating more than 200 jobs for Bay Area employees, particularly software developers.

Oracle also announced in March that its quarterly revenue grew 22% and quarterly net profit totaled $3.7 billion.
