Gunther doesn’t have a confirmed opponent at WrestleMania 42 despite being one of the company’s top stars – with legends John Cena and AJ Styles having recently retired. This appears to be because the company has yet to decide who he will face in the match.
According to a new report from WrestleVotes Radio, Gunther’s internal status is currently listed as “undecided,” with several names being discussed but nothing officially confirmed. The report highlights the three leading candidates to face Gunther at Mania.

Those names are Rey Mysterio, Brock Lesnar and Oba Femi. The most direct connection involves WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio, stemming from the path Gunther is on. On the March 2 episode of Monday Night Raw, Gunther defeated Mysterio’s protégé Dragon Lee, a “professional killer” who even tried to unmask the young star.
“Not sure. Not something I’ve heard 100 percent. Don’t know where they’re going. Most likely Rey Mysterio, especially with what’s going on with Dragon Lee. Maybe they have something else for Gunther. If it’s not Oba and Brock, maybe Gunther and Oba Femi. It doesn’t look like it’s Gunther and Brock at the moment. We did have a discussion on Wrestling Vote Radio about how they kicked Gunther out of the match. On Brock Lesnar Construction began before the challenge was raised,” the report said.
Although the situation has been complicated by Lesnar’s recent public challenge, the possibility of a “dream match” with Brock Lesnar remains. While Lesnar has been heavily linked to a match with Los Angeles Cavaliers, some insiders believe a collision with Gunther is still “appealing,” especially considering their brief interaction during the 2026 Royal Rumble.
Additionally, the meteoric rise of Oba Femi has created a third option as fans strongly desire to see these two powerhouses test each other’s mettle in what many consider a “heavyweight showcase.”
