A shocking new survey from Harvard University’s Center for American Politics (CAPS), the Harris Poll, and HarrisX shows that with eight months until the midterm elections, Republicans and Democrats are evenly matched.

An online poll of 1,999 registered voters conducted on February 25 and 26 found that if the midterm elections were held today, 50% of Americans would vote for the Republican candidate in their congressional district and 50% would vote for the Democratic candidate. That marks a huge improvement for Republicans, who trailed Democrats 54%-46% on the same issue last month.

When presented with the following hypothetical campaign message from the Republican Party, 54% of respondents said they found it “credible”:

Republicans say they are returning responsibility to the government by arresting criminals, closing borders, keeping taxes low and lowering energy costs. We cannot return to the days of Democrats who allowed our cities and way of life to deteriorate, energy and food prices to skyrocket, and fraud costing their giveaway programs billions of dollars.

Meanwhile, only 48% of respondents said they thought the Democrats’ hypothetical message was credible:

Democrats say we’re here for affordability. Free government services. Free housing and transportation. Health care for all. Free student loans. If you elect us to office and we have the money and can provide these services, we will bring down the billionaires

Still, 61 percent of Americans say they are willing to accept the Democratic Party’s overt anti-Trump message, which goes something like this:

Suppose the Democrats say we need to stop Donald Trump. He is a fugitive dictator,
We need to limit his power by returning Congress to Democrats. his
Tariffs caused prices to rise, and he began venturing abroad.

For Trump’s part, his net approval rating rose to -3 (46%-49%) from -6 (45%-51%) last month.
