Bethesda announced at Sunday’s Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase 2022 that Starfield — Bethesda’s upcoming next-generation role-playing game for PC and Xbox Series S/X consoles — will be available in the first half of 2023. During the showcase event, Bethesda also showed off Starfield’s gameplay, revealing that players can visit more than 1,000 planets, build bases on each, and use their starships to fight in space. The game was originally scheduled to go on sale in November this year, and it will be open to Xbox Game Pass members on the first day.

Starfield game director Todd Howard showed off Starfield gameplay footage at the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase 2022, featuring over 100 star systems and over 1,000 explorable planets. In the 15-minute Starfield gameplay trailer, several aspects of the game are detailed, including the ability to customize heroes, build outposts (or bases) on explored planets, starship spaceflight and combat, and planetary environments details.

According to Bethesda, Starfield will be set in the year 2330 and offer extensive customization options when creating heroes. Unlike the new city of Atlantis with a landing zone shown in the Starfield gameplay trailer, players will be able to land anywhere on the planet. They’ll have to establish outposts — or bases — for upgrading gear and modifying weapons, as well as harvesting the supplies they need to survive the dangers in the area.

According to Howard, some planets will be extremely barren but resource-rich, while others will feature wildlife. Over the course of Starfield, players will encounter non-playable characters (NPCs) that they can interact with and hire to work at various outposts — even their starships.

Outposts aren’t the only thing players will have to do when Starfield releases next year. Each starship—the spaceship used to explore other planets in each galaxy—can be equipped with upgradable parts, including engines, weapon systems, and shields. At the same time, the interior and exterior of the starship can also be customized. According to Bethesda, they can be piloted and used in real- space battles against other spaceships.
