Sony said the pricing of the newly launched PlayStation 5 Pro has not had a negative impact on console sales. While the company has yet to reveal initial sales figures for the PS5 Pro, it does not believe PS5 Pro sales will have a “significant contribution” to overall PS5 sales because it is a high-end console aimed at “hardcore” users. PS5 Pro launches in select markets on November 7 for $699.99.

PS5 Pro price has no ‘negative impact’ on sales

Sony President Hiroki Totoki made the remarks during the company’s second-quarter fiscal 2024 earnings call on Friday. During the Q&A session at the press conference, Totoki answered a question about PS5 Pro pricing, saying that PS5 Pro sales are included in the company’s overall PS5 sales forecast for this fiscal year. Sony expects sales of the console to reach 18 million units in fiscal 2024.

“PS5 Pro is quite high-end. Hardcore users are the target of this hardware. So, we’re not making a huge contribution. And compared to PS5, I think it’s actually stronger,” Totoki said during the earnings call.

“As far as pricing goes, a lot of people have made mixed comments about it, but I don’t think the pricing of PS5 Pro has had a negative impact,” he added.

PS5 Pro released

The PS5 Pro was first announced in September and finally launched last week in select markets including the US, UK, EU and Japan. The console’s high price point has drawn criticism since its launch – the PS5 Pro has a suggested retail price of $699.99 (roughly Rs. 58,750) in the US. In the UK, the console will cost £699.99, while in the EU and Japan it will cost €799.99 and 119,980 yen (tax included) respectively.

Despite its hefty price tag, the upgraded console doesn’t come with an optical drive out of the box. Customers can purchase the add-on optical drive separately for $79.9, which further increases the price of the console for those who plan to play physical media on the console, including games and movies.

On Friday, Sony also confirmed that the PS5 Pro is not launching in India due to the Indian government’s telecom policies. The new console supports Wi-Fi 7 (IEEE 802.11be), which uses the 6Ghz band that is yet to be allocated in India.
